Identifying fish diseases in a pond before it’s too late!

Many new pond owners believe that once their fish have settled into their new home, they can simply leave them, and they will look after themselves. Sadly, this is not the case. In most cases diseases are caused by poor living conditions, which can be a result in lack of maintenance and inadequate filtration.

If your fish are sitting on the bottom of the pond with their fins clamped in or shedding excessive mucus, it's time for a water test. Other symptoms of ill water quality consist of redness on fins, white haze over the fish, odd behaviour, ulcers, fungus, mouth rot and other dead fish.

Do I have Parasites in my pond and how do I identify them?

If you are unlucky enough to have parasites in your pond you know how stressful this can be on you and your fish. Without knowing the exact parasite your fish have it's very difficult to treat, and you could be wasting your money on the wrong treatments. Not only that, if your treating with the wrong treatment that could be precious time wasted that’s needed to save the fish.

If your fish have parasites, they will be showing either one or more of these signs.

• Lethargic behaviour.
• Erratic swimming behaviour.
• Flicking on the ponds side or bottom.
• Excessive mucus shed.
• Jumping.
• Rapid gill movement.
• Inflamed red gills.
• See the parasite on the fish’s body.

There are many parasites your fish can get and many ways they can spread. If your fish are showing the above signs, we strongly recommend getting a fish scrape to identify the parasite. The most common parasites in koi are Whitespot, Flukes, Gill Flukes, Costia, Trichodina and Chilodonella
